Senator Wants to Get Rid of Grade 12

A Republican Senator has proven that he values money over the educational development of children. Ironic, as a well-educated workforce could lead to new ideas and innovations that could keep America on top and fix those budget issues.

“Budget shortfalls in Utah have prompted Republican Utah State Senator Chris Buttars to present a proposal that would eliminate the grade 12. With a budget gap topping $700 million, the proposal reflects the desperation of Utah lawmakers and has outraged students and educators throughout the state.

Estimating the plan could save $60 million, Buttars has since toned down his original proposal by suggesting senior year become optional, provided students complete required credits early. This would mean high schoolers would be pushed into the real world as early as 16. No other state has proposed cutting senior year as a solution to budgetary problems.”

Buttars seems to be unaware of how valuable grade 12 is in preparing students for the transition they will make into post-secondary school. The proposal to make it optional is no better especially given his requirement that students complete required credits early. Cramming 4 years of education into 3 is not the way to educate our youth.

We get more evidence of how Buttars regards the education system further down in the article, “he has also sponsored an intelligent design bill in the Utah State Legislature recommending that Creationism be taught in public schools.” I think there’s a word to describe Buttars: anti-intellectual.
