School in B.C. teaching Creationism as Science

http://www.bclocalnews.com/bc_thompson_nicola/kamloopsthisweek/news/86407677.html

No surprise here, a religious school in Kamloops is teaching creationism as an alternative scientific theory to evolution.

“Ligertwood said the problem is not that the school is teaching religious theology, but that creationism is being taught as equal to evolution in science class.”

At first this doesn’t seem so bad, a religious school teaching typical crackpot religious ideas. No, the issue here is the fact that the school is government funded.

“Bill Ligertwood, director of the Kamloops Centre for Rational Thought, includes independent schools like Kamloops Christian School, which is a religion-based institution that receives government funding.”

The B.C. government needs to get its act together and cease funding to a school that is telling students that creationism belongs on the same ground as evolution. It doesn’t. I will continue to stress this point, religion can be taught in schools, as long as it is separate from the science class.

““They can teach all the religion they want to teach, and that’s what they’ll do because it’s a Christian school, but it shouldn’t be in science class. It’s not science,” he said.”

Teaching children that creationism is science is downright irresponsible the impact on their futures could be quite negative. They’ll be laughed out of any credible scientific organization if they go forward promoting such ideas.
